Pijal with its two parts Pijal Bajo y Pijal Alto is a little village some 6 miles southeast of Otavalo. Here, you can enjoy beautiful views on Lake San Pablo, Mount Imbabura and the Mojanda Mountains. Most inhabitants of Pijal belong belong to the ethnic group of the Kayampi, and they are famous all around Ecuador for their high quality embroidery.
Back in 2006, a total of 23 families formed the tourism association “Sumak Pacha”, whose main aim is to implement sustainable forms of rural tourism within their village.
The families offer accommodation and food at their homes, as well as guided hikes to nearby mountains, lakes and waterfalls. You also can learn their traditional art of embroidery, or help the families with their daily work in the fields and gardens.
